If the round I am playing is with friends for the heck of it then it is casual dress with a nice polo and jeans or shorts, if I am hitting balls then what I have on works because I end up sweating by the end of my range session & don't need to use up my Foot Joy shirts for that. Tournament I dress accordingly, Foot Joy shirts tucked in slacks etc etc... Still the same person no matter how I dress & my rounds usually are just as consistent in any attire.

Gary D, with all due respect to your opinion, John Daly is hardly a person to use as an example for anything to do with classy golf. Here is a person that was gifted with tons of talent only to throw it away with both hands. I'll never forget the time he was giving a clinic at a tour event and turned around and fired a ball with his driver into the gallery. He could have injured or killed someone, but was probably to intoxicated to even care. Anyway, on to the subject at hand, I believe that clothes DO make the man. True, It's not going to turn you from 20 to scratch overnight but there is reasonably priced clothing out there so that you don't have to look like a panhandler walking around the golf course. And guys, could we please tuck the golf shirts in and put on a belt ( I know i'm gonna here it on this one ) I was an Ironworker for 40 yrs. and tucked my shirts into my jeans at work.
  3. I agree and think that this impacts all aspects of life. We feel better when we perceive that we look better. Through feeling better, we can achieve greater outcomes. "Perceive" and "good" being the key words. Your perception of "looking good" is completely different than someone else's. "Looking good" is subjective and should be an individual endeavor. I have known people who believe it is vain to take such pride in personal appearance (pride is, after all, the downfall of man). Given this perception, these individuals would not feel comfortable presenting the same image as you; as it would not accurately represent their values and ideal self image. I try not to make judgments based on a person's appearance. That being said, you can tell when someone really tries to look good, and you can tell when someone really tries to look bad. It would be foolish to dismiss this information, because it could help you to communicate more effectively with said individuals.

Environment has a lot to do with the subject. A conformist will attempt to align their perception of "looking good" with the commonly accepted view of "looking good", in a given environment. This comes at the cost of individuality and true self actualization; leaving the individual disillusioned and uncomfortable when they find themselves in a different environment. Some of the most brilliant and successful individuals in the world present a sloppy appearance. I am not brilliant, so I press my pants....

More times than not, a sloppy appearance is un-intentional. I feel that intentional actions benefit me in the game; by way of achieving a higher level of muscle memory and routine. Muscle memory and routine allow us to auto pilot variables of the game which are more constant, allowing us to focus on variables of the game which are less constant (variables unique to a given day and circumstance). Golf is a part of my life. In the interest of bringing a higher level of order to my life, I try to bring a higher level of order to golf (long term brand loyalty, wardrobe uniformity, routine consistency etc...). I think we should present ourselves in a way that is true to our own individuality, while being respectful of the environment and circumstance which we are in. This view leads me to press my clothes and present a neat and intentional appearance, in all environments I occupy. However, if my view did not lead me to this "neat appearance" place, I would not respect a person who made judgments based on their narrow perception of my appearance. Thought provoking discussion! Thank you so much for putting it out there.

PS. None of this applies to individuals who tee up with a dirty ball. Those people are savages and deserve harsh judgment...
