Discussing one part of the wedge characteristic, bounce, is tricky. A wedge's bounce is influenced by the turf and how that bounce is being applied to the turf by golfer. If you're hitting on an artificial turf mat, that may not necessarily duplicate the surface you play on a regular basis; at the same time the opposite could be true.

In an ideal world, if you can get fit in an environment that best simulates where you play most of your rounds, that would be nice. Other than that, an indoor simulation isn't a horrible alternative.

Wedge fitting should never be done on an indoor mat. Just ask yourself how many times you leave a divot from a wedge shot on the course, and how many you leave on the indoor mat.

I was fit 2 years ago for Cleveland wedges indoor by a great fitter who took a lot into consideration, like angle of attack, whether I use the club for full swings, partial swings, etc... and it worked out great. I got along really well with the wedges. I was recently fit last fall for Vokey's and the experience was similar and I went with a similar bounce and grind. The Vokey fitting though never went through shafts. The fitter was going to put me in a stock shaft and I asked for the same shaft as my irons. There was really no other option. So it comes down to the fitter and what's available.

That is surprising given that even the SM9 in-store stock options added a lite steel and a graphite option to all the Vokey’s. I had my SM9’s built with TT AMT red R flex to better match my Tensei red iron shafts. Shafts are always open to adjustment on Vokey builds even if fitters do not have adjustable wedge heads in their fitting carts.

I have to go off of my experience of doing wedge fittings both ways. I suggest waiting for an outdoor fitting. Wedge play is so much about surface interaction and that is something a mat can hide.
