Maybe it's just me, and maybe I'm showing my age, but can we get agreement in the golfing world, PLEASE, and stop calling metal "woods", metals, and just keep calling them woods. I know they're not made of wood anymore, but irons aren't made out of iron either, and we still call them irons. I remember my kids that played growing up when they were really young asking about irons being called irons when they weren't made out of iron, and it was easily explained that they used to be back in the beginning days of golf. I don't think it's just me as most of the television commentators will still say "...he's taking out the 3 wood", while a few will say "3 metal". If it's just me, then give it to me, let me have it, but good and I'll move on. But nearly everyone I talk to about it thinks the same. Just one man's opinion

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to me that the U.S. announcers will say "Wood" and the European announcers will say "Metal".

  4. Agree, "woods".

"Metals" seems to be a generational thing, that is, if you played when metal woods were introduced, the distinction was more often made and made more sense.

I'm glad they still call them "green fees" even though I hit it into the blue (water) and brown (out of bounds).

Agree. A 3 wood is a 3 wood, not matter what material its made out of. Just like a 5 iron is a 5 iron, even though its made out of a combination of steel, titanium, tungsten, and who knows what else.

It's woods. It took me a long-long time to be ok with others calling it metals just to get through a point.

Learned to call them woods, we translate it to dutch though. Which might be the reason we will never be using metals here. Also it doesn’t sound well in my opinion

Steel is made from iron ore, thus irons

I don't care if commentators want to sound stupid and call them metals, they sound stupid over so much more whats one more thing.

cally must agree with you, they call their 7W heavenwood, not heavenmetal

But I'm not impartial, I was using wood well after DL3(last holdout on tour) made the change
I also didn't go to graphite until they were good enough that a stiff graphite would control the clubhead as well as a regular steel.
  9. 100% agree. My son (11) calls them woods too.

As a traditionalist, I like "woods." I hate change.

On the other hand, I am happy we have moved on from "brassie," "spoon" and "baffing spoon!" I can't hit my "mid-mashie" very well, so I changed over to an 818H hybrid, thank you very much.

I have pristine '83 Titleist 3 & 5 persimmons and game 'em every now and then. Like many TT members, I grew up on persimmon and was the last of my partners to switch.

My favorite from the PGA on Monday - "he is taking a fairway metal, a 3 wood, and going for the green in two….."

Drives me absolutely batty...… woods people, woods!
