What Shots Do You Admire From Other Players?

    Hey, Team Titleist.

    Have you had a chance to see the video above from our Pro Files series? This is one of my favorite new videos because Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler answer a question I’ve been curious about for years - what do Tour players think about the games of their fellow competitors?

    I've always been one to look closely at how other golfers play the game. It's especially fun for me when I play with someone who can hit a shot (or many shots) that I don't have in the bag. I've learned so much from fellow golfers who are kind enough to share their techniques, swing thoughts and different approaches for getting the ball in the hole.

    How about you? Are there specific shots or aspects of your friends' games that you admire? Is there a specific shot that the club champion or your favorite tour player hits that you wish you could master? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

    Let me kick the conversation off by sharing my latest example:

    I was practicing recently with my brother, Greg. As we usually do, we ended the session with a modified H-O-R-S-E contest. We take turns calling a shot to a green on the practice range and seeing who can pull it off better. After each shot, the loser picks up a letter. This day Greg basically ran the table, hitting perfect little low stingers that moved left-to-right as they fell. I could hit it low and straight or high with a fade, but the knockdown fade is not in my repertoire. Not yet. Greg promised to teach me the shot next time out, which will be soon, because I can't wait to add this one to the arsenal.

    I admire the shots that go straight lol.

    Seriously though, the one I admire the most are the ones that spin back. I can only get the ball to drop and stop, haven't mastered the spin back as yet.

    Any wedge shot that Steve Stricker hits. I love watching his effortless and efficient swing on these shots.

    Best shot I witnessed while playing with regular guys was a number of years ago that was pulled off by I guess, no coincidence, the best golfer I played with on a regular basis. His tee shot landed along the tree line on the right-hand side of a par-4 dog-leg right perhaps 135 yards from the green. While he faced the green because of the dog-leg, I thought he had no option other than to punch-out to the front of the elevated green. He proceeded to hit a shot that stayed low under the branches of at least three trees with some low hanging branches, then to my amazement, the ball rose once it was past the trees and landed like a butterfly on the green. When I asked him how he executed the shot he simply said he closed the face of a 9-iron and played it back in his stance. Perhaps to some of our TT shot artists this was no big deal, but it sure was a thing of beauty at the time.

    Within 30 yards, a low trajectory wedge that skips 2-3 times on the green and stops. I'm almost always high on the skip count and lacking crisp brakes.

    Justin Thomas drives. How he finishes at the end is just amazing. How fast he swings and still able to keep his balance...

    There are actually 2 shots that I admire. One is the 2 bounce and then stop dead chip. The other which is what I find great to look at is a nice high sweeping draw, that can be done on command.

    I play with a guy that is a ball-striking machine, literally. I know, we all claim to have one or two of those guys. But this guy has popped 60 a few times in the last year, including a 58 from 6900 yards a few weeks ago. I just admire how he hits the ball so SOLID with every shot, through the bag. When his putter is on, it's crazy to watch, and I'm around scratch myself.

    Phil's flip shot and just his wedge game in general. He’s so creative with his wedge shots around the green and can see and create so many things that most players can’t. Definitely a good player to look up to especially being a fellow lefty

    I am, like others, a big fan of the chip shot where it checks up and rolls about 1-2 feet. That takes timing and a lot of work.

    I love watching players that have a very precise short game inside of 50 yards. A low two hop and stop, a soft flop, or a gentle sand shot that dies near the hole. I love watching all of them.

    I admire anything hit successfully out of the sand... it is the one shot I have truly struggled with and haven’t been able to conquer

    I've enjoyed how Justin Thomas as dialed in his wedge game from 120 and in. When he first came on tour, he seemed to go hard at everything. Within the last 18 months, he has choked down a little and smoothes it. Combine that with his length and its no surprise he's done what he has so far.

    The basic, run of the mill....chip shot. Never know which club tom use; how hard to hit it; where to place the ball in my stance. etc Seems everyone does it differently and everyone teaches it a different way, too.

    I'm pretty much in awe of most shots the guys on Tour hit. One shot I really admire is a very high long iron. I've never been a high ball hitter, and some of the guys I play with can just launch a moon ball with a 5 or 4 iron. It's such an advantage on a long par 3/4 or short par 5. I usually have to play for the front of the green knowing I'll get some roll.
    I'd absolutely love to be able to hit towering long irons.

    It's always fun to have someone to practice with, Rick. My bro and I haven't done that since he moved to the east coast. I miss that.

    Any pro and any friends who are proficient within 60 yards in like Zach Johnson or Louie Ooo aside from the younger stars are just amazing to watch and see what they could do. Soo cool!
