  1. Hello everyone, Over the past 5 years I have ended up having 3 shoulder surgeries after a bad accident and my doctors finally said I could start playing again back in September. I find my flexibility in my left arm is seriously lacking after everything. I did not realize it at first I was so happy to be swinging again but I have found that going to the top of my backswing im now bending my left arm at the elbow to reach what used to be my natural height. I have to focus very hard on keeping my left arm straight. I am only able to get to about a 3/4 swing before this bend starts creeping in. I know not having played much at all over the past 5 years is not helping. I was hoping that you guys may have some kind of a tool or trick that you have used to help train/retrain that muscle memory. I am working with a coach and hitting the range at least 3 times a week as well as a personal trainer to try and get some of that flexibility back as well. Thank you for any ideas in advance!!

I personally think that you are doing the right thing and there are no special tools or tricks. The personal trainer is going to be your best friend to get that muscle memory back. Follow his/her lead to the letter and do your home exercises. Listen to your coach and do not overdo your range time. Coordinate with your PT and coach to see how much time you can spend on the range. I did not go to the range until my Physical Therapist released me. My issue was for hips and back. My neurosurgeon states that surgery at my age is not a option. So I have to limit my range time as well as my number of days I play.

Work on getting your left shoulder past the ball in the takeaway (assuming your right-handed), that's the end of your backswing. You'll have to become more rotary, which is the Smart Ball theory. Ease into it, as you'll have to re-train yourself. If you look at Rahm/Finau, even pure swingers like Sergio, they don't get the club anywhere near parallel to the ground. The key is to be patient, consider it a major swing change, not coming back from injury. Good luck!

There are 2 aspects to improvement. You do have a team to work on your mobility. I’m rehabbing a shoulder and multiple rib fractures. Looking into the TPI directory I found a medical level 3 chiropractor that a couple of areas to work on alleviating poor flexibility.
The second aspect is once your bes

The second aspect is to look at what you can do and maximize your swing to your potential. A top instructor will work with that and not match you to repeat Tiger’s 2000 swing. On the senior tour there are pros that bend their left elbow on their RH backswing. But they are back at full extension at contact. As well as lifting their left heel on the backswing. They aren’t as flexible as they were 25 years ago and have accommodated their swing to their ability.
    Good luck in your journey.

I have a quick and easy drill you can use or i can go more in depth. I'll just give you the quick and easy drill unless you ask for more in depth information. With or without the club in your hands go to the top of your backswing and simply push out with your right arm. That's it! Many golfer's left arm break down simply because they try to put too much angle in their right arm. The right arm needs to be straighter than 90 degrees...more than 90 degrees, not less than 90 degrees. So at the top practice getting the right arm straighter and it will allow the left arm to remain straight.
