Upgrading My Entire Bag – Putter Advice Needed

    I’ve recently overhauled my entire bag with new Titleist gear. I’m now playing a TSR2 driver and 3-wood, and just a couple of weeks ago, I upgraded to T150 irons with KBS $-Taper 120 shafts. The only club still hanging around is my putter, which is about 15 years old, and I’m seriously considering making it my next upgrade.

    I usually shoot in the mid-to-high 70s or low 80s, but I feel like I’m leaving a lot of strokes on the greens. I rarely 3-putt, but I find myself 2-putting more than I’d like—getting close but not quite sinking those crucial putts. I’m starting to think it’s not just my stroke, but that my old putter might not be right for me anymore.

    For those who’ve upgraded their putter recently, did you notice a significant improvement in your putting game? I’m curious if a new putter could be the key to shaving off those extra strokes.

    Honestly, yes. I know putter performance is mostly about preference and feel, but last year I went with the Phantom X9 and monkeyed with the weight selection, length and grip to find what feels the best for me, and surprisingly noticed a bigger than expected improvement in performance. Convinced me that even a putter should be fitted to your game.

    Ask Scottie Scheffler. :) Seriously though, there is nothing wrong with trusting a gamer for years. Some of the best putters ever on the PGA Tour stuck with their favorite. Ben Crenshaw, Brad Faxon, Tiger, all work on technique but do not change their putter. Others have seen significant improvement after making a switch. Having a professional fitting in not a bad idea and making a change and then giving it enough time to set in is not a bad thing. Only you and a fitter will know for sure.

    That grip Scheffler uses impressed the heck out of me - on my putter now, I did not know it existed until I saw his - best of all criteria and in 3 available sizes.

    I recently upgradege to the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 (2023 Edition). If you are into blade putters that may be a very good option to work with. The feel off the putter face is superb. But, as we know putting in extremely personal. Good luck!!

    The only piece of equipment you use more than a putter is the ball. Makes sense to find a good putter fitter to confirm the putter that fits your stroke. Arc of your stroke, attack angle, length all come into play.
    That person can assess whether you are trying to compensate your stroke to match the putter. I did another fitting this year. The face balance wasn’t right and I was aiming right to compensate. I no longer live in fear from 5 feet and in. As well as drop more 10 feet than I had previously.

    For me its the type of putter. I can only putt with anser style and blades. Any mallet, double wide, squareback and I don't ever hit them on line. Whatever you do DO NOT get rid of your old putter. I would say try something different. Pick up a used putter, buy whatever feels good in the store. Try the new Ai navy blue and gold putters from the other company if you truely think it's your putters fault, get that Ai forgiveness. Sometimes your putter just needs to go in time-out then it can come back in the bag. I switch between a PLD and Vault 2.0, both CNC milled. I never liked the feel of that milled face Scotty Camerons that everyone covets. I've always stuck to the OG Karsten designed putter. I recently put a KBS Tour GPS shaft in my putter and it's been fantastic with miss hits.

    I just received my GT2 driver and fairway. They are unbelievable, no other driver on the market can compare. I am using the ProV1x and the ProV1 lsft dash and the ball flight is tremendous. I can a couple of MPH of club head speed. Titleist has hit a home run with the driver and fairway. I am hoping for a new model of the ProV1 left dash. It is fantastic in the wind and I can control my distance. Keep up the great work! Titleist is way ahead of the curve in technology. Sincerely

    Putting is 50% Putter and 90% mental. (To paraphrase Trevino) but know which basic style is best for you.

    Mallet or Blade or potato-masher?
    Std./Flat/upright
    Paper towel grip or S/M/L conventional
    Smooth/cord/firm(Iomic) or squishy material
    Shaft length

    Get a putter that fits your _confidence profile_ unless you need a broomstick - then we have zero to talk about.

    Sometimes putters respond to a "time out"...but Baby in a corner and try something different!!

    I only ever wanted to play with a blade. Love the look and feel but I would push a lot of putts. Tried weighting with lead tape and had a lot of high quality putters. SC Newport 2 etc. I’m not as much technique and more feel. After making a lot of 2 putts per round and not sinking those opportunity birdies or par saves, I had to switch. Found the SC Phantom 5.5 (Homa) to fill that gap. After 4 practice putter sessions, played a round 18 with a 1.56 putt average and shot a low of 73. One of my best rounds as a 8 handicap. I would say keep searching!

    I used the same putter for the last 10 years and finally bought a new one. It was a huge improvement for me. The feel and the face was what I noticed. I started feeling confident on putts up to 12 to 15 ft, and make them 70 pwrcent of the time.. where as before I was maybe 20 percent.

    My girlfriend in 1982 bought me a putter as a birthday present. Still use the same putter and married that girl. To me, putting is all head and hands. Find the head that feels right first time. Proper length and find the grip that suits you. Practice.
